Pamphlet B Rule 17: Instrument Insurance

Don’t miss out on insurance savings! Our 2016 - 2020 Pamphlet B/SET Agreement Rule 17 requires your touring company to provide musical instrument insurance to protect against loss or damage. In advance of your tour, each musician may request instrument coverage and must provide all information describing the instrument(s) to be covered and their value to their company management team.

Layoff Notice Rules

Under our Pamphlet B/SET Agreement Rule 18, touring productions may schedule up to 10 weeks of unpaid full company layoffs per season, at a maximum of 4 consecutive weeks at a time, and must notify you at least 4 weeks in advance. After 6 weeks of full company layoffs, musicians might able to receive an out-of-town living expense (per diem). Specific terms are listed in the 2016-2020 contract under RULE 18: LAYOFFS. You can download the Pamphlet B agreement from the AFM website  (afm.org).

For assistance interpreting contract language, please contact George Fiddler, AFM Director of Touring, or feel free to attend a TTC meeting for peer-to-peer support!

Unemployment Filing

Your Company Management team is required to provide you with the information needed to file your unemployment claim. This applies to both full company layoffs and Rule 24 layoffs. Provided information will include which state you should file in, the company’s federal ID, company address & phone#.

For example, New York State uses their Department of Labor website The Unemployment Claimant Benefit Process | Department of Labor (ny.gov) while Maryland uses the Beacon system Helpful Resources for Claimants - Division of Unemployment Insurance (maryland.gov).

Your first week of unemployment is an unpaid “waiting week”, so don’t wait to file! File during your first week of layoff to avoid missing out on paid benefits.

Employer’s Pension Fund (AFM EPF)

Learn more about your pension benefit from the American Federation of Musicians and Employers’ Pension Fund (AFM EPF) with some practical, easy-to-understand information, available on www.afm-epf.org. Register on the website to access additional tools and resources. Click here to view a PDF “Learn More About Your Pension Benefit” with links to information from the EPF participants page.

Your Benefits

Unemployment benefits vary from state to state. For example, in New York State, the current full benefit rate is $504 per week while Maryland’s (Networks Tours) is $487 per week.

Depending on which state you live in and how many weeks you worked there, you might be able to file in your home state to receive better unemployment benefits. For example, Washington State currently pays up to $1,079 in full weekly benefits ESDWAGOV.

Your fellow travelers can offer guidance and tips for navigating unemployment services, but every person’s situation is unique. For specific recommendations, please reach out to us directly.
